Methodology and caveats
Data covers disbursements from January 3, 2023 through May 31, 2026 (latest transaction in the source file).
Sources
- Corporate PAC disbursements: FEC Schedule B data in
big-AI-spending-2023-2026.csv(Microsoft, Amazon, SpaceX, Google, Meta and Anthropic PACs). - Scores: the Human Rights Campaign 118th Congressional Scorecard (2023-24), transcribed in
hrc_118th_congress_scorecard.csv.
What is counted
- Direct contributions only. A disbursement counts when its FEC type is
24K(contribution to a committee) and it names a candidate.24Kcontributions to leadership PACs, party committees and other PACs have no candidate and are excluded here; they are indirect money, which this site does not yet trace. - Amendments are collapsed. If a transaction was filed more than once, only the latest filing is counted.
- Refunds and voids are netted. A voided or refunded contribution reduces the candidate’s total.
- Cycles. 2024 and 2026 refer to the FEC two-year transaction period of the donation.
How candidates get a score
Each recipient is matched to a scorecard entry by state, office and normalized name (handling nicknames such as Jim/James, compound surnames, and candidates who changed chambers). The same person under two FEC ids shares one score. Matches that are ambiguous are left unscored. Candidates are placed in one bin:
| Bin | Rule |
|---|---|
| 0 | score is exactly 0 |
| 1-24, 25-49, 50-74, 75-99 | score in that range |
| 100 | score is exactly 100 |
| No score | no scorecard match, or a scorecard entry without a score |
Caveats
- Score vintage. Every score is from the 118th Congress (2023-24). A 2026-cycle donation is paired with a prior-term score, and a candidate’s current positions may differ.
- Many recipients have no score. Challengers, newly elected members and others who were not in the 118th Congress have no HRC score, so No score can be a large bin.
- Name matching is automated. A small number of manual overrides fix unusual FEC names. Mismatches can move dollars between bins.
- Anthropic. Its PAC appears in the data with no direct candidate contributions, so its displays are all zero. The figures may change with more years of data or when indirect contributions are added.
Reconciliation
For each PAC, direct plus excluded dollars equal all (deduplicated) 24K dollars.
